A name for the hardest question in genomics: what does this change mean?

A variant strain of a species, distinguished by its biochemical or physiological properties — a spelled-out form of biovar. It carries 81 records in PubMed, from the Mycobacterium fortuitum third biovariant complex in strain typing to a 2025 review describing the two biovariants of avian influenza. Old enough to be real, current enough to still be in use.
Read as bio + variant, it names the modern unit of analysis directly. "Variant" is the field's neutral, standard term — it displaced "mutation" precisely because it carries no verdict. Assigning that verdict is the whole business.
Unambiguous on first hearing. It spells itself out loud — the practical test most invented biotech names fail.
Clinical genetics classifies every variant on the ACMG/AMP five-point scale. Four of the tiers are answers. The middle one is the industry's open wound — and its largest addressable market.
Each of these is a coherent company that could be called BioVariant tomorrow, without a word of explanation to the market.
